Jack Harrison has revealed that he had discussions with Aston Villa ahead of joining on loan from Leeds United in the summer. Speaking to Liverpool Echo after making his debut for the Toffees against Villa last night, Harrison said: “It’s a long story, I’ll take the time to explain it properly. It’s a complicated situation, but I’m glad to be at Everton. It was inevitable that I’d make my debut for the Tofferes.”

Unai Emery’s side lost 1-0 at Villa Park on a night when they also lost a winger. Leon Bailey went off with a leg injury at the 31st minute, and was replaced by the on-loan Oriol Romeu. Given Villa’s other options on the bench at the time, it looks like the Toffees will have to look elsewhere.

Harrison appears to be the ideal wing-back to join Sean Dyche’s team, a player with the work ethic to have thrived in Bielsa’s Leeds side. As Villa’s busy campaign continues, it may well come as a source of regret that Harrison has gone to Everton.

Although dropping out of EFL Cup won’t be a huge blow for the club in terms of the number of games they will have to play, the result will be a source of concern.

This season Villa have looked great at times, but have been surprisingly inconsistent.

Manager Unai Emery’s team will now face a huge challenge when they host Brighton on Saturday lunchtime.
