Dodgers Star Mookie Betts Brings His Gold Glove Defense To Shortstop

Before the Los Angeles Dodgers’ historic $1.2 billion splurge this winter, there was Mookie Betts.

Betts was the first of Dodgers’ general manager Andrew Friedman’s mega-signs when he agreed to a 12-year, $360 contract extension on July 22, 2020, the day before that Covid-delayed season began.

That contract looks more palatable every day. In the right light, it almost seems bargain-like, given the ever-spiraling MLB market and the unique skill set that Betts has expanded upon this season.

Betts’ bat has always played, and this year his premier defense has translated to a new position — shortstop — in his first extended time there.

“I’m trying to wrap my head around any comparable,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “I haven’t seen it. You are talking about a complete position change and to play at a high level at that position. I just haven’t seen it.”

Betts’ only comp may be Betts.

Traditionally somewhat of a slow starter, Betts has had the best first five weeks of his 11-year career at the plate while helping the Dodgers to 23-13 record and a comfortable 5 1/2-game lead over San Diego in the National League West.

Betts’s slash line — .352/.459/.577 — includes 10 doubles, six homers, and 27 RBIs. His eight stolen bases lead the Dodgers, who because of their stacked lineup do not play small ball as much as other less powerful opponents.
