Pierre Ekwah of Sunderland analyzes David Moyes’ role in West Ham United’s relegation.
Pierre Ekwah thinks David Moyes “had his reasons” for not playing him after moving from West Ham to Sunderland.

The 21-year-old joined the Black Cats in January after failing to break into the first squad at the London Stadium for 18 months.

Ekwah has had no issue establishing an impression with Sunderland, having played 24 times for them since his arrival, including all five league games this season.

When asked why West Ham let him go, Ekwah told The Sunderland Echo [11 September]: “I think Sunderland made a good recruitment.”

“If I didn’t make it, it could mean I wasn’t ready to play.” The manager had his reasons for not allowing me to play [at West Ham].

“I think my path, I was meant to be here, and that’s it.”

Ekwah is not the only player to fail to make the Premier League before falling down and succeeding in the Championship.

The good news for Ekwah is that he is still only 21 years old and thus has many years ahead of him.

Based on the last eight months, leaving West Ham has done him no harm, as he is now a regular for the Black Cats.

Sunderland have a reputation for giving young talent a chance, and Ekwah is no exception.

Having said that, Moyes plainly did not see enough in the France U20 international to consider him worthy of a first-team spot last season.

United were struggling at the time and didn’t have the luxury of bringing in future stars, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t have been more patient.

If Ekwah maintains on his current track, he may meet paths with West Ham again in the Premier League shortly.

In other West Ham news, a young player on the Hammers’ books recently demonstrated his desire to succeed with comments he made.

West Ham United’s transfer decision may come back to haunt them as Vladimir Coufal suffers an injury.

West Ham may be delighted with their total summer transfer activity, having successfully replaced Declan Rice and strengthened in other ways.

Despite the fact that a new full-back was always high on David Moyes’ priority list, none arrived at the London Stadium before the September 1 deadline.

As a result, the Hammers are extremely thin on both sides of the defense, relying on Emerson Palmieri and Vladimir Coufal to remain fit.

Unfortunately for Moyes, Coufal appears to be a significant injury doubt for next weekend’s visit of Manchester City after suffering an injury while on international duty with the Czech Republic.

Coufal played 90 minutes for the Czechs in their 1-1 draw with Albania last Thursday [7 September], but manager Jaroslav Silhavy afterwards stated the defender would not participate in Sunday’s friendly against Hungary.

Coufal was not included in the team for the 1-1 tie at Puskas Arena.

Given that the Manchester City game is only five days away, Coufal is unlikely to participate against the English and European champions.

That is bad news for Moyes, who has started the 31-year-old in each of United’s four games this season. In fact, he is one of four Irons outfielders to have played every minute of every game [FBref].

Because no cover has been brought in, Moyes is left with Ben Johnson and Thilo Kehrer as the natural options for Coufal should he be declared out for the City game and potentially beyond.

West Ham’s great start to the season has been built on a pretty stable starting lineup, but Moyes may need to reconsider.
